What's the Difference Between the Shure MV7 and MV7+?
If you're comparing the original Shure MV7 to the newer MV7+, the good news is simple: the core of the mic hasn't changed. Same dynamic capsule, same cardioid polar pattern, same dual USB-C and XLR design. What's different is everything around it — the controls, the DSP processing, and the finish.
The Control Panel Got Simpler
The original MV7 has several physical touch controls on top for gain, headphone volume, and monitor mix. The MV7+ replaces all of that with a single customizable LED touch panel. Tap anywhere on it to mute instantly — that's it. Shure simplified this specifically because users found the original MV7's small onboard controls fiddly to use in practice.
The tradeoff: you now do more of your fine-tuning through the free MOTIV Mix™ desktop app rather than on the mic itself. If you liked having physical controls at your fingertips, that's worth knowing going in.
New DSP Features on the MV7+
This is where the "+" actually earns its name. The MV7+ adds:
- Improved Auto Level Mode — adjusts gain based on distance, volume, and spatial detection, building on the original's leveling feature with more precision
- Real-time Denoiser — strips ambient room noise as you record, not just in post
- Digital Popper Stopper™ — removes plosives digitally, instead of relying only on a physical foam windscreen
None of these existed on the original MV7. If your recording space isn't fully treated, these upgrades do real work.
The LED Panel Is Actually Customizable Now
The original MV7 has a basic backlit meter. The MV7+'s LED touch panel supports 16.8 million colors, configurable through the app — useful if you stream on camera and want the mic to match your setup, or just want a visual gain meter that looks better on screen.
What Stayed the Same
- Cardioid polar pattern
- 50 Hz–16,000 Hz frequency response
- Dual USB-C and XLR connectivity
- All-metal housing and build quality
- 5/8"-27 thread mount, compatible with the same stands and boom arms
Which One Should You Buy?
If you're buying new, the MV7+ is the better pick for almost everyone — the DSP improvements alone (especially the Denoiser and Digital Popper Stopper) make a real difference if you're recording somewhere less than acoustically perfect, which is most home studios. The original MV7 is worth considering only if you specifically prefer physical onboard controls over app-based configuration, or if you find a strong price gap secondhand.
